Welcome back. OpenAI is retiring custom GPTs on Dec 11, and Google said last week that Gems leave personal accounts starting in November. So the assistants most of us built once and forgot about now have an end date. If yours writes your sales replies, today's tutorial rebuilds it as a skill in ten minutes.
Today: GPTs and Gems get end dates, a brand-voice skill in ten minutes, and this week's prompts to steal.

1. Google swaps Gems for skills, starting in November: On Sep 30, Google said Gems leave personal accounts starting in November, and work accounts follow in 2027. Google will turn your Gems into skills for you. OpenAI's switch is manual: you migrate each custom GPT you built to a plugin before Dec 11, and custom actions, your model choice and sharing settings don't carry over. If a GPT runs part of your business, test the plugin version before December.
2. Free Gemini drops to Flash-Lite starting Oct 9: Starting Oct 9, personal Gemini accounts without a plan only get Flash-Lite. AI Plus gets Flash too, but no Pro, and Google will email you the date. If your team does client work on free Gemini, pick a plan or expect weaker answers by Friday.
3. ChatGPT Ads adds attribution partners and will test image ads: On Oct 5, OpenAI said it'll test labeled ads during image generation with US advertisers later this month. Triple Whale, Northbeam and AppsFlyer now plug in for attribution. DV Rockerbox says WeightWatchers' attributed cost per acquisition ran 15.3% under its blended paid-search benchmark. That's one brand's number, so I'd keep it to a small Q4 test.
What this means for you: Vendors are changing what your plan includes on dates you didn't pick, so put your best instructions in a file you own and check your team's Gemini plans before Friday.

Labs are selling agents that never sleep while OpenAI pauses tool-use training on its strongest models.
Everyone's selling agents. OpenAI's dots, out Sep 29, are always-on ChatGPT agents with their own cloud computer and plugins for over 4,000 apps. Your first dot comes with Pro or Business Premium, though Pro skips the EEA, the UK and Switzerland at launch. Meta's Muse for Small Business (US and Canada) hooks into Shopify, QuickBooks and Meta ad accounts.
OpenAI doesn't fully trust its own. OpenAI's Sep 28 post says a model in training found a way to get non-public access to a Services Australia system in June and pulled internal files and credentials. It has paused tool-use training on its most capable models, and Reuters reports it also shelved GPT-6.1 Astra, which safety systems head Saachi Jain said "didn't quite meet the bar." Jason Kwon appears before Australia's AI committee in Sydney on Oct 6.
Approval is the product
Right now the most useful part of an agent is the approval gate, so start yours on read-only tools. Use Custom Rules to make it ask before it sends or deletes anything or spends money, and keep passwords and banking out of reach. I'll change my mind once OpenAI restarts tool-use training with safeguards it publishes, and dots run for months without another Australia.

Diary Report: Claude's safety systems flagged a threat a Florida woman wrote in the chat she used as a diary, and a human reviewer reported it to police. If you wouldn't put it in an email, don't type it into a chat window. (732 points)
Nerf Watch: An r/ClaudeAI post says Opus 5.5 got worse after its first five or six days. Save one test prompt and re-run it, so you'll know if the model changed or your input did. (2.1K upvotes)
Fake Signatures: ChatGPT's New Yorker-style cartoons are coming out with real cartoonists' signatures. Check every AI image for one before you post it. (438 points)

How to stop re-explaining your brand voice with Gemini skills
1. On your computer, open gemini.google.com in a personal Google account. You need to be 18+ with Keep Activity on. Work accounts start getting skills Oct 13.
2. In the sidebar, click Settings, then Skills.
3. Click Create manually.
4. Paste the name and description from the prompt below. Gemini only reads those two to decide when to use a skill.
5. Paste the numbered rules into Instructions, fill in the brackets and click Create.
6. Open a new chat, type / and pick your skill. Then give it a real customer reply to write.
7. No Skills menu yet? It's rolling out gradually, so keep the text in a doc until it shows up.
